Petrification of wood occurs when silica binds with the celulose of a plant, turning it into stone, often retaining the microstructure of the plant.

These gorgeous polished petrified wood bookends are from Arizona. Streaks of warm browns and reds are indicative of iron oxides present during permineralization.

~ 10" long  x  6" high  x  2" thick
