Kachinas
The Kachina is a representation of the Southwestern American Indians' protective spirits. They are the spiritual guardians of the Native Americans and their way of life. Kachinas are believed to possess powers over nature. The Native Americans impersonate Kachinas in specific rituals in order to persuade these spirits to perform certain acts in return, such as, providing rain for crops and insuring the increase of game animals. There are approximately 300 familiar Kachinas, each having its' own significance in tribal belief and another 200 rarely used. The "Kachina Doll" is used as a teaching tool for the Native American children.
