Inuit Stone Carvings

The subjects chosen for carving usually reflect the traditional life of the Inuit. Birds, owls, seals, walrus, polar bears, adults and children predominate. Men hunting and women with children are depicted in a way that is characteristic of their lives. They are not presented as "portraits". The birds and animals are often given an additional dimension, that is, they are not created realistically, but rather as possessing spirits of the gods. Also, mythological carvings are produced, depicting legends of the Inuit.
